Brutally Blunt Blog Blustering #40: A Life in Equinox

It's Blusterin' Time!

And remember: Blustering should be a two-way street; if you've asked to be blustered, you better be a blusterer.

If you're new to this feature or need a refresher, click the label at the bottom of this post and see the first few posts. Otherwise, here's the basics:

What I'll do is list a site; you're asked to critique it. But here's the catch: to induce the most honest reactions, don't leave the comment using your normal alias/login - instead, go anonymou
s, and be as brutally honest (or complimentary) as you wish to be. Also, be specific, and naturally, don't be rude. If I deem anything inappropriate, I'll have no problem deleting the comment.

So, go to the site listed below, familiarize yourself with it for a few minutes, then come back and leave some constructive criticism and/or comments that you have.

Site: A Life in Equinox: A Movie Lover's Journal
LAMB#: 403

If you're up for this treatment for your site (and you're a LAMB), send me an email with the subject "Bluster Me!" If you've already done so, no need to do it again - you're on the list, and these will be going up in order of when I received your email (by the way, it could take a while for your site to be Blustered, since I don't run this more than once a week or so).

  1. Hmm, seems a little late. My proof in the link below.

  2. Yes, until you consider that AM and the LAMB just might have different readerships.

I knew AM had already done this, but it was in my queue and I wasn't just going to ignore it.

  3. I'm a big fan of Life in Equinox, and really appreciate the variety of features, articles, and reviews. The layout works well, except I've never liked the background pattern. It just looks too... MS Painty, or something. Minor complaint, though.

The writing is generally very good, though sometimes he needs to check his grammar, typos and over-usage of sentence fragments.

  4. I personally think it's a good idea to have the url be the same as the title of your blog (eg ilovemovies.com leads to a site called I Love Movies), but it might be a bit late to fix that in this case.

I would also centre the buttons/pages along the top under the header. Centered things are pleasing to the eye. If you'd like html instructions on how to do this, I can give 'em.

The writing is good, but there are some giant blocks of text I would stay away from to be sure not to lose people. Most net-surfers have a short attention span, myself included. So make it snappier to catch people's attention.

Agree about the MS Painty background, but that's so minor. Overall I really like this blog and have been following for some time. Really enjoy the segments :)

-I don't know how to say this but the layout is too blue
-Fractured thoughts in reviews but not often

  6. To be honest I had all but forgotten I had sent this in. Either way, thanks Fletch. More input the better :).

@Anon1 Thanks for the feedback. I know my grammar isn't up to snuff. As I say that I imagine half the sentences I'm writing here are grammatically void (including this one). I am trying to work on it though.

@Anon2 I could change the, but I don't want to until I know it won't affect too much. Because of my custom template (which I've overly modified) a lot of what I have there are work-arounds (including the pages) to get elements I wouldn't be able to otherwise.

I am looking into more modern templates, with those features built in which should also limit the background and blue.

@Anon3 The Fractured thoughts in reviews are usually on purpose, and are often meant to add a bit of light comedy/backdrop information. If they're not working in that respect I can limit them in future use.

    Thanks again everyone :)

  7. I agree with some of the typo/grammar mistakes. This is one I've noticed a bit too often - words missing. For example from your response above:

    "@Anon2 I could change the, but I don't want..."

You could change the what? There's obviously a word missing, not just a fractured sentence, pieces are missing.

  8. @Anon4 Aye, I was bound to do it in my response.

That happens to me a lot. I have a painfully non-concentrated mind, so it will hop to another subject entirely while I'm in the middle of writing my sentence. For the life of me I don't know why I can never catch it. Most likely because I know the word is meant to be there, and just fill it in when reading it over.

Thanks for the heads up though :)
