LAMBcast #65: Whatcha Been Watchin’ Lately?

The ever popular Whatcha Been Watchin’ Lately once again spawns for another discussion of a really messed up film…but probably not from the person you’re expecting. Is it Nick, Dylan, James or Stevee? Come to think of it, all of the films we discuss are messed up. Also, we talk about a film made before 1970! Yay!

listening to this episode and, as i understand, HOSTEL is about how, in the first half it is boys using women for their own ‘games’, etc – whilst the last half is about how much more powerful people use the boys in their own games. Though not sexual in the second half, it is about different people, in a position of power use and abuse others. I haven’t seen HOSTEL II to know how accurate this interpretation is…

RASHOMON – i think ‘classic’ films break down into two categories – influential and never-again. So, CASABLANCA, never-again will you get those actors, at that time, with that direction and that script … it will never happen again. Whereas AVATAR was inevitable – 3D has been developed for many years and, inevitably, one film will invest in it and exploit it and change the industry to some extent. Anyone could’ve been in it and the script could’ve been roughly the same and it would’ve had the same effect. I assume Dylan, that you believe RASHOMON is primarily influential, opposed to never-again…

@ Simon – you would believe correctly, though time has showed that answer to be indisputable. It happens all of the time, more or less. Interesting theory and way to look at the classics, though.
