Well, it looks like a lot of you thought “Madagascar 3” and “Prometheus” were worth the price of admission again as they were at the top spots again last week.   The musical “Rock Of Ages” premiered at number three. Followed by “That’s My Boy” at number 4 and “Snow White and The Huntsman” at number five.

Will Pixar have another Oscar nominee with their movie “Brave” or will everyone check out “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter“.  Woody Allen’s latest “To Rome With Love” is playing in select cities that week and according to some early reviews I read it might just stay there.   But enough with all this chit chat.  Let’s get to the trashing.

Pitch Perfect.  10/05/2012

The tag line of this movie is “Get Pitch Slapped”.  If that doesn’t convince you that this looks like a piece of crap than watch the trailer.  There is not one likable or interesting character in this whole thing. Everyone seems shallow. and it looks like a bad Disney T.V. sitcom.  Yeah they can sing, but that’s not enough to fill a whole two hour long movie.  That’s barely enough to fill a thirty second ad.  The trailer has several moments where it could go into an “R” rated territory but at the last second it just holds back. It even opens with a really bad rape joke that I almost found offensive.  Not because of the subject, just because it was a really bad joke.   Anna Kendrick was nominated for an Oscar for “Up In The Air” and in my mind should have been nominated for her work in “50/50“.  Here she plays a high school student and after seeing her in more mature roles it looks like she is working backwards.

Resident Evil: Retribution.  09/14/2012

I’ll be honest with you.  I have only seen the first two movies in this franchise all the way through.  The third one I stopped watching halfway and I think I caught the end of number four on TV at a friend’s place.  So I am not going to be the best person to give a great review of this trailer.  It looks like another zombie movie with a lot of CGI effects and slow motion fight scenes.  The preview begins like a really typical rom-com, but when the zombies appeared, I started laughing.  I don’t think this is the approach they were trying for, but nevertheless it didn’t work for me.  I know a lot of people out there really love these movies, so if you are one of them.  My thoughts on this are going to mean very little to you.

Sinister.  10/05/2012

Ethan Hawke discovers some old home movies up in the attic and in playing them releases a demon that comes after his family.  This ad  follows all the typical tropes you have seen in countless other horror movies before.  Fast cuts, creepy kids doing odd things, screetchy sound effects, and a big scare at the end.  Even the so called evil entity  looks like someone I would want to hang out with much less something scary.   If your not familiar with horror movies or are afraid of the dark then I could understand why some of you may be freaked out but for all others beware.

V/H/S.   10/05/2012

This flick has been getting  huge praise  at most film festivals such as Sundance and it does look like one that would be cool to watch with friends.  The trailer however does seem kind of vague and not so coherent in my opinion.  The premise involves a bunch of students who decide to break into a place and steal one VHS tape, but end up discovering five.  They decide to watch each one to decide which one is the right one, and in doing so find some really f’ed up home movies.   This movie had me asking one question while I was watching the ad.  If you’re  trying to find just one tape why are you watching the whole thing?  You should be able to tell if it is the right one in about ten seconds, right.  I like that they are mixing in the found footage genre to the anthology movie, but really thought they could use a different approach.

Farewell My Queen  07/13/2012

The last days between Marie Antoinette(Diane Kruger) and one of her readers played by Lea Seydoux.  I have not seen Diane Kruger since “Inglorious Bastards” and I almost forget that she is an actress in other countries too.   Lea Seydoux has been in some huge movies here in the U.S. including “Mission Impossible:Ghost Protocol” “Midnight in Paris“, and I hope she continues to get roles.  It’s really great these two actresses are in movies both in here and in other countries.  I wish some of our celebrities were that diverse. As for the movie itself, it  looks really interesting as it dives deeper into the history of the troubled queen.  You could have a double feature of this and Sofia Coppola’sMarie Antoinette” too.
