Foreign Chops #9: Cinema of Quebec

The Barbarian Invasions

Hi everyone. I’m Robert from Sketchy Details and I’ll be taking over Foreign Chops. I want to thank Steve from 1001plus for starting this great feature and running it so well.

The first topic of the new year is the cinema of Quebec. The Oscar nominations came out last week and Canada is once again in the running for Best Foreign Language Film with War Witch. In the past eight years, Canada has made the short list eight times, been nominated five times, and won once for French Canadian features. There are over 70 years of films to explore from a region that has routinely produced the highest grossing Canadian features each year. Here’s a list to get you started.

We’re carrying on with the same rules for Foreign Chops. Each website can submit up to FIVE posts exploring the cinema of Quebec. That’s five per site total, not five per author per site. They can be old or new reviews, features, or retrospectives so long as they’re about French Canadian films. Send the links to me at robertjgannon@gmail.com by midnight EST on March 6. Include “Foreign Chops” in the subject of your e-mail. I’ll gather up all the submissions and post them on the first Thursday of month, March 7. Feel free to include suggestions for future themes, as well. I’m always on the look out for good ideas.
