MAKEUP & HAIRSTYLING

BY LUCIEN OF BUZZHUB

The sole Oscar category with three nominees this year, Makeup & Hairstyling is one of the few places where both Hollywood blockbusters and Oscar nominated melodramas can go head-to-head. The Hobbit‘s beards were snubbed in 2014, as were Catching Fire‘s extravagant Capitolites. However, there are three VERY different films nominated. Let’s take a look…

Dallas Buyers Club

I’m unsure if Matthew McConaughey’s dramatic weight loss to play AIDs patient Ron Woodward constitues as ‘Hair & Makeup”, but this film nevertheless deserves to be nominated in (and to win) this category, with Jared Leto’s powerful performance as Ron’s transgender fellow patient and ‘business partner’ Rayon being based around his complete physical transformation into the character.

Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa

Visual Effects is usually the category in which despicable Hollywood fiends like Michael Bay receive token Oscar nominations, but this year Johnny Knoxville- who in my strong opinion has been poisoning cinema screens with relentless crudity for years- has been given a nod for the relatively impressive old-age makeup in his Bad Grandpa mockumentary. Bad Grandpa may not have succeeded in being funny, clever, original or many other things, but the people who were humiliated and terrified in equal measure by Knoxville’s character DID NOT know it was the star, and hence his makeup clearly succeeded!

The Lone Ranger

As soon as the internet saw the first still of Johnny Depp as Tonto in Gore Verbinski’s universally unsuccessful western, it knew two things.

  1. This would almost certainly be a terrible film. (In the end, it wasn’t that bad at all).
  2. The makeup was completely over the top, but well done.

And so, we have reached the point where Hollywood’s favourite running joke of 2013 can proudly display on its poster that it is an ‘Oscar Nominated Film’.
