The title says 9, but this is actually the tenth film in this franchise since “Hobbs and Shaw” does not feature “the family”. So however you measure it, they still make it to space faster than Jason or James Bond.
This film was due out a year ago and Red Digital Cinema, who had paid highly to have their cell phones placed in the movie, have left the mobile phone market entirely since the film wrapped. Which means their product placement is even more outdated than the stuff they are trying to clear up for “No Time to Die”.
F9 continues the recent vein of the series by setting the story in the world of international espionage. The Toretto Family is again at the center of events and a long lost sibling turns out to be the antagonist in this plot. There are flashbacks and exposition a plenty, so if you haven’t seen any of the other films, don’t worry, that’s not essential. Of course if you haven’t seen any of the other films before, you might be flabbergasted at how ridiculous the movie is. None of the Lambs on this week’s show however were caught by surprise, we all new it was preposterous pie being served.
If you don’t believe that, just listen to this “Pontiac Fierro in Space”, and we are not talking Space X putting a car in it’s rocket, this film puts the rocket on the car. Let Neil deGrasse Tyson explain the physics on that. So for much of this podcast episode, you will be listening to our guests delightfully mocking the science or lack thereof behind the stunts we are seeing.
Somewhere along the line Richard loses control of the conversation and Lisa Leaheey, Thomas Stoneham-Judge and Jeanette Ward, exceed 80 mph in taking on the events in the film. It does go off on enough tangents that we spend as much time on Charlize Theron’s haircut as we do on any of the stars in the picture. Just like the movie plots of this film, the death of a character doesn’t mean they are not coming back, we resurrect a Lamb who dropped out of the show, and put him in the discussion anyway.
So “Fast Ten Your Seatbelts”, it’s going to be a bumpy ride, but one you want to be in the passenger seat for.
